The United States Army will send prototypes of its new generation of armored vehicles to Fort Hood, Texas, in the fall of 2026. Among them are the M1E3 Abrams tank and the XM30 infantry fighting vehicle.
Soldiers from the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, part of the 1st Cavalry Division, will be the first to operate the equipment under real-world conditions, beginning training and practical evaluations later this year.
After months of familiarization, the troops will take the two vehicles to a full rotation at the National Training Center in Fort Irwin, California, in the spring of 2027. The brigade, with around 3,400 soldiers, will split the testing between the prototypes: one platoon will be responsible for the M1E3, while two platoons will evaluate different versions of the XM30. The initiative marks an important step in the modernization of U.S. ground forces.
The new M1E3 Abrams represents a significant change compared with current models. About 10 tons lighter, the tank is designed to overcome mobility limitations associated with excessive weight. In addition, it features a hybrid electric-diesel engine that is up to 50% more fuel-efficient. The vehicle also incorporates advanced digital systems and artificial intelligence, capable of expanding battlefield awareness and accelerating threat identification, increasing the crew’s chances of survival.
The XM30, meanwhile, was designed to replace the veteran M2 Bradley, which has been in operation since 1981. Adapted to the demands of modern combat, the new vehicle brings improvements focused on technological integration and power supply for systems such as drones, sensors and electronic warfare equipment. Both programs are part of the “Transform in Contact” initiative, which seeks to accelerate the adoption of new technologies directly in operational units, reducing the time between development and combat use.
